Expert summary
Hybrid cars refer to any car that runs on at least two distinct sources of power. Usually hybrid cars refer to cars that are more environmentally friendly because they are powered by an internal combustion engine and an electric motor – also known as hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The two common methods for combining power sources in an HEV result in either a 'parallel hybrid' or a 'series hybrid'. In a parallel hybrid, both the engine and electric motor turn the transmission at the same time. In a series hybrid, the gasoline engine turns a generator to create electricity while only the electric motor can turn the transmission.
